The Fair Credit Reporting Act can be very confusing for organizations, so we are here to offer some clarity and some explanations.

Even though the name includes the word “credit”, the FCRA applies to all types of consumer reports. These consumer reports include criminal background checks, reference checks, driving history checks, etc. If you use a third party (like a background screening firm) and pay them to conduct your background checks, then you must follow the requirements of the FCRA.
